Playing to Your Strengths: Making Work Fun and Productive
Using What You’re Good At
Picture this: Every day you get to do things you love and are really good at. This isn’t just fun, it also helps you do a great job! This is what it means to play to your strengths, and it can make work feel awesome. Sometimes, in busy work life, we forget about this, but as a new year begins, let’s remember how important it is. When you and your team use your best skills, work gets better and everyone is happier.
The Big Idea: Focus on What You’re Best At
A while back, a group called Gallup studied lots of businesses. They found out that the best way to do great at work isn’t just fixing what you’re not good at, but using what you are good at. This doesn’t mean you ignore the stuff you’re not good at, but it’s really important to use your best skills more.
How to Work with Your Strengths
- Find Out What You’re Really Good At
First, think about what makes you and your team super good at your jobs. It’s not just about being okay at something; it’s about what makes you awesome. What work makes you really proud and happy? That’s what you’re best at. You can use tools like the Gallup Strengths Finder to learn even more about your cool skills. Maybe you’re not just good at selling stuff, but you’re great at understanding what people need. Or maybe you’re a super leader because you’re good at helping your team do their best.
- Get Even Better at Your Best Skills
Now that you know what you’re great at, work on getting even better. Think about how awesome it will feel to improve what you already do well. You can read books, take special classes, or even get a coach to help. Make sure you spend more time getting better at these things than worrying about what you’re not good at.
- Make Sure Your Work Fits Your Skills
Last, make sure your job lets you use your best skills. This might mean changing some things, like giving some tasks to other people who are good at them, or changing how your team works so everyone can do what they’re best at. This way, work is more fun, and you do a great job.
