Seeking The Whitespace

Fast, loud, and relentless. That’s life these days.

The world’s moving faster than ever, and everything is competing for your attention.

→ Emails dinging → Phones buzzing → Social feeds pulling you into their vortex of doom scrolling.

It’s no wonder your head feels like a noisy pub on trivia night. All chatter, no clarity.

Too much noise.

Getting Clear: It’s What You Don’t Hear.

I’ve got kids, and if you’ve got them too, you’ll get this. You know that limit you hit when they’re talking at you non-stop?

One’s telling you about something that maybe actually happened at school, the other’s demanding to know where their footy gear is, and another’s making noise just for fun.

It’s overwhelming. Your brain freezes, frustration builds, and then— “Shuuuut uuuup!”

Sound familiar? Now imagine trying to do your best thinking in that state. Impossible.

That’s what most of us are doing every day. We’re drowning in noise and wondering why we can’t find any clarity.

Life is unpredictable and uncertain. You don’t need certainty, you need clarity. Clarity for right now. And how it’ll help you get from where you are, to where you want to be.

But clarity doesn’t come from pushing harder or doing more. It’s the opposite. It comes from stepping back. Finding the whitespace.

Time For A Tune…

Here’s what I mean. Think of your favourite song.

Got one? Good.

Now, you’re probably thinking of the notes, the vocals, the beat—which is fine, it’s what you remember.

But it’s not just the notes that make it great. It’s the silence.

The pause before the beat drops. The moment everything pulls back, giving the next part room to hit harder.

For me, it’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen. That breathless moment just before Freddie launches into the operatic madness? Goosebumps. Every time.

The magic is in the silence.

Think about it like this—how hard would it be to read a book with no punctuation? No capitals, no spaces between the words, no sentences, no paragraphs. Just a huge endless word salad of jumbled up letters, mixed together without any structure. Yuck.

Jumbled up word salad of a famous songThe Lyrics to “Down Under” – Men At Work

If you jam all the notes and vocals from your favourite song together with no breaks, guess what? It becomes unbearable static noise.

The song only comes out because it is punctuated by whitespace.

It’s the same in life and work. Whitespace is the quiet between the chaos. It’s where the real magic happens.

This, like many other things, I learnt the hard way.

Running my businesses, I used to think the answer was always doing more. But all it got me was exhaustion and mediocre results.

It was only when I started carving out intentional whitespace—time with no distractions, no noise—that things began to shift.

And I’m not the only one who’s seen this work: Nick, one of the members in my group, has mastered this.

Over the past year, he’s built a morning routine that’s become his secret weapon. Every day, he dedicates time → To thinking about his future → Reflecting on the recent past, and → Diving into books that help him grow.

It’s not just a routine for him—it’s a way of life. And because he’s disciplined about creating that whitespace, he’s kicking goals and smiling smiles.

Old mate Albert Einstein knew it:

“I think 99 times and find nothing. I stop thinking, swim in silence, and the truth comes to me.”

Or, perhaps a better fit because we’re talking about music:

“Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.” – Simon & Garfunkle

And they’re right. Whitespace isn’t a luxury. It’s a reset button. It’s what gives your brain the room to breathe. To connect the dots. To find clarity.

How to find your whitespace.

So, how do you find your own whitespace? Start small.

→ Block out ten minutes a day—no notifications, no distractions, just you. → Or take one morning a week to step back and think long-term. → Go for a walk without your phone. → Or sit quietly with a coffee.

People today are terrified of being with their own thoughts, and have trained themselves into bad habits to avoid it.

Let me prove it to you.

I like people-watching, so I have noticed something I find entertaining. It’s a fun observational experiment you can play with too:

Next time you’re at a cafe or a restaurant, and you see a couple there. (First dates are fun because it is a guaranteed result, but they’ll all do it.) Watch until one of them needs to go to the toilet, or suck on a durry outside… What does the other one do? Watch.

Start counting the seconds.

One… Two… Thre—boom! There it is.

They pull their phone out and bury their face in it to avoid being alone with their thoughts. Happens every time.

It might feel weird at first. Uncomfortable. Unproductive, even. But stick with it. Your best ideas don’t come when you’re drowning in noise. They come in the quiet.

Give it a go. Create your whitespace. You might just find it’s the most valuable thing you’ll ever make time for.

To your silence, Stephen ‘Seek The Whitespace’ O’Sullivan
